Apple releases "revised" firmware update for AirTag trackers

Apple today released a new update for AirTags, a revision of the firmware released last June with which some privacy-related features have been improved.

The firmware is still 1.0.276 but is now identified with build 1A287b. The previous one was 1A276d. Since the firmware version has not changed, it will not be possible to distinguish whether the new one has been installed or not through the Where's app.

We remind you that it is not possible to force the update of an AirTag which will take place automatically, in OTA mode, via a connected iPhone. The only caution to follow is to keep the tracker within range of the iPhone anyway.

Firmware 1.0.276 added improvements to anti-stalking security and this new version probably improves them. The update has changed the window of time within which you are notified if an AirTag is used to track the movements of a person without their knowledge.

Previously, this time frame was over 3 days, far too large and easily exploitable to monitor the movements of a person with whom you interact frequently without ever issuing the alert. The new update has drastically reduced the window to a causal range of between 8 and 24 hours.
