A fairly shorter battery life of an iPhone more than a few years old, or even relatively recent but treated without too much concern, compared to the autonomy it originally guaranteed may be the indicator – to tell the truth, it almost is always – of the need to replace it with a new one.
With the exception of the most recent iPhones, Apple's smartphones have never stood out for their autonomy, and even if the times when, ten years ago or a little less, even a dozen people were near the charging points are long gone of airports with an iPhone in hand, a three or four year old phone might need a new battery to get back to its former glory. Often you don't need to change your phone, it's more than enough to have the battery replaced. To be sure and avoid unnecessary spending, just check the health of the iPhone battery: here's how.
Check battery cycles on iPhone
There are several programs to check how many charge and discharge cycles an iPhone battery has accumulated. Unfortunately, however, it is not an operation that can be done directly from the telephone: in fact, the "technological" support of a computer is needed, but the good news is that it can be either a Windows or a Mac.
Among the programs available, we suggest you try iCopyBot, which has a version for Windows and one for Mac and, unlike others, it is paid but you can get a free trial. You can download it at this address (click on the Download item next to the iBackupBot version suitable for your computer, whether Windows or Mac).
After connecting your iPhone to your PC or Mac with the original cable, and downloading, installing and opening the program mentioned above, the name of the iPhone should appear on the lower left of the application and approximately in the center the wording More Information in blue on the screen.
Clicking on More Information opens another window containing information on the charge and discharge cycles performed by the iPhone battery: it is the number next to the CycleCount item in the Battery paragraph. "A common battery - writes Apple - is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 500 complete charge and discharge cycles", and it is usually just below 80% (therefore about 500 cycles) that replacement is recommended.
Check the battery health status on the iPhone
Those who own an iPhone with iOS operating system version 11.3 or later and want to save time and steps can have an indication of the battery health status of the iPhone directly from mobile. It is a much faster procedure which however loses the detail on the number of cycles.
So: to get the most precise indication possible, it is better to use the previous method, if instead you can be satisfied with a general but still exhaustive indication, you can continue with the steps below.
The information on the health of the iPhone battery can be found in the Settings - Battery - Battery status menu, where the remaining capacity is shown as a percentage compared to the new phone and possibly, just below, any limitations on the performance of the 'iPhone due to a battery now to be replaced because it is beyond the wear limit.
