Lots of group conversations, years-long chats: having an application like WhatsApp that takes up many gigabytes is actually pretty simple. Fortunately, it is equally free space without having to juggle the internal folders of the smartphone and can be done directly from the application on both Android and iOS.
How to delete useless files on WhatsApp
After opening WhatsApp, users can easily delete the files received in various chats and then downloaded to the device. It can be done selectively, thus choosing only certain files or only certain conversations.
To do this on Android, you need to open the application, tap on the three vertical dots at the top right and then continue in Settings > Space and Data > Manage space.
To do this on iOS, tap the "Settings" icon at the bottom right and from there choose "Space and data" and then "Manage space".
From the screen that opens, you can see the space occupied entirely by WhatsApp and the free space on the device.
A clarification: not all the space occupied by WhatsApp is derived from images or videos shared on conversations. The occupied space is in fact divided between "WhatsApp media", therefore photos or documents, and "apps and other elements". In this case, the user can act on the first category of content.
The following is a list of your chats, which are sorted by how much space they occupy on your smartphone. By tapping on one of the chats, the user will see the various media (including voice messages), sorted by size. Holding down on a content, it will be selected; at that point, the user can select other files by tapping their respective icons. Once done, you need to tap the trash icon at the top to delete them. A notice will appear to confirm the deletion; furthermore, it is advisable to also delete the copies of this file in order to save further space.
Disable automatic media download
Many users leave the automatic media download option turned on for convenience. This means that whenever other users, especially in groups, share any multimedia file, it is automatically downloaded to the smartphone: even if the user is not participating in a conversation, the user could find the device gallery full of videos and photos.
To prevent this from happening, the user from Settings >Space and data can choose whether to download the media under the mobile network (3G, 4G, 5G), when he is covered by the Wi-Fi network or when roaming. You can also choose which media (photos, audios, videos and documents) to download automatically: unchecking all the boxes for all cases will disable the automatic download of WhatsApp media.
The user will still be able to download the files shared in the conversations: just touch the single file in the conversations to start the download.
