Counterpoint Research's report on the third quarter of 2021 photographs a European smartphone market still with a negative sign but all in all slightly recovered from the effects of the pandemic: the shortage of semiconductors, processors in particular, is negatively affecting sales. This is a trend which, unfortunately, will continue in the coming months. In the course of the quarter in question, sales recorded a minimal decrease compared to the same period of last year, in the order of 1%, but compared to the previous quarter they decreased by 4%.

Data see Samsung resist at the top of the European ranking, with 30.4% of the market, but with Xiaomi now only 7 percentage points apart thanks to an annual volume growth of 51%, despite significant limitations on component supply.

Xiaomi, Apple and OPPO have gained significant shares in Europe over the past year. Cupertino's company has seen the already excellent sales of iPhone 12 strengthened with the arrival of the new generation. OPPO has benefited from the recent merger with OnePlus, especially in Western Europe.

Samsung, as said, remained in first place but recorded a quarter on quarter drop of 6% and 16% year on year. Although the past component shortage has well recovered, the Korean company has seen its market share gradually fall, avoiding the worst thanks to the good sales that the Galaxy Z Flip3 has achieved.

Of note also the excellent performances obtained from realme and alive, in fifth and sixth position, that on an annual basis have grown, respectively, by 160% and 238% starting, however, from not particularly important quotas.

Rising also Motorola and Nokia, collapsed Honor and Huawei that recorded declines of more than 90% year on year. After the split from Huawei, however, Honor began investing in the European market again with the recent launch of his new Honor 50. Huawei instead launched its Nova 9, always without Google services due to the ban imposed by the United States.

Final note for Apple that it is recording excellent sales for the iPhone 13. Although the new range was put on sale in late September, it would seem to be already more in demand than last year's model. If it can keep up with demand, Apple is looking forward to yet another record quarter in Europe.
