From the United States comes new details on the operation of EZCal, a feature currently under development that uses a smartphone to perform automatic calibration of Samsung TVs in SDR and HDR. The novelty was announced at CES 2021 and we had talked about it quickly in an article that reported the unofficial specifications of the Neo QLED QN900A TVs. The Korean giant has recently organized some demonstrations for US colleagues; thanks to these first impressions we have much more information.
The central role is entrusted to the EZCal application developed for smartphones from the Samsung Galaxy range and for Apple's iPhones. After installing the app, you need to connect your phone to the same Wi-Fi network on which the TV you are going to adjust is also present. The TV then displays a screen showing how to position the smartphone in relation to the screen. Before proceeding with the actual calibration, the amount of light in the environment is analyzed (from the TV and smartphone). The transition is necessary because any process of this type is directly dependent on ambient brightness: a perfect adjustment made for a darkened living room would be totally incorrect and very unpleasant to look at in a room that is always well lit (the opposite is also true).
The next step is to measure the images displayed by the TV using the smartphone's built-in camera. The data collected, together with the information on the brightness of the room, are used to set all the parameters necessary to obtain an optimal image quality according to the standards in use, the same that are used in every step from creation (directors, colorists) to distribution. content (streaming, on disc or on TV channels).
