HomeNewsSamsung Galaxy S20: tips and tricks to use it
We list below some tips and tricks that could facilitate and optimize the use of a Samsung Galaxy S20.
From Rosalba Varegliano -Customizing a smartphone is often the most interesting part, so we have collected some of the most useful tips and tricks to make the most of a Samsung Galaxy S20.
Use the volume keys for media
Many are now used to activate the silent mode or only the vibration, for this reason companies like Samsung decide not to make the volume keys exclusively dedicated to adjusting the volume. However, if you want those keys to be prioritized exactly to adjust the media volume, just press the volume key, tap the drop-down menu arrow and activate the respective media volume.
Sort apps alphabetically
To sort your apps alphabetically, simply open the app drawer, hit the three-dot menu in the top right and tap "Sort" to find the option you're interested in.
App drawer icons
By default, Samsung surprisingly concedes a few icons on the home screen grid, but with displays as large as they are now, there's really no reason to keep that setting. Long tap on an empty area of the home screen, select the home screen settings, and set the home screen and app layouts to 5 × 6 configuration.
Chrome as the default browser of the Samsung Galaxy S20
This is a personal choice, of course you can also continue to use the fully functional Samsung browser. However, if you use Chrome on other devices it might be useful to use it again. If you want to use it, just set it as your default browser by accessing the default app settings from the main settings menu.
Switch to Gboard
Samsung's keyboard needs improvement. The suggestions are slow, not very good, and the layout doesn't seem particularly good at predicting what your fingers are actually looking for. Download Gboard and you'll never go back.
Disable the Bixby key
Pressing the power key on the Samsung Galaxy S20 will not activate the options provided to turn off (or turn on / restart) the device. To work around this problem, drag down the notification panel, press the power icon and at the bottom of the screen you will see a "Side key settings" button. From here, you can activate the “Press and Hold” feature to replace the Bixby activation with the on / off function.
Show the battery percentage
For some, knowing the exact battery percentage is a must. It's pretty easy to add it permanently to the status bar - pull down the notification panel, swipe down again to toggle expanded quick settings, then hit the button for the 3-dot menu. You will find the “Status Bar” item, which has an option to show the battery percentage reading.
Brightness slider and multimedia controls on Samsung Galaxy S20
In the same menu (by clicking the 3 points) where the status bar options are active you can set the panel layout. This allows you to turn the slider on or off to adjust the brightness each time you open the notification panel, rather than just when quick settings are displayed. Also at this point you can typically choose to disable the device and media controls interface, as this is virtually unnecessary if you prefer to have only a few items.
Disable Samsung weather notifications
If you use the Google or other app to get weather notifications, you don't need a second app to send you another notification for the same reason. Go to the app area in Settings, search for “Weather” and disable all notifications. This won't affect the home screen weather widget, it just prevents unnecessary notifications about information you don't need a second time.
Increase the display timeout
Samsung sets the display timeout for its phones to 30 seconds. If you prefer it to last longer, go to the display settings and set it to 5 or 10 minutes.
Switch to 120Hz screen with Samsung Galaxy S20
The 60Hz screen mode is present by default as the battery life of the phone is better in that case. However, with a 4000mAh battery on even the smallest S20, it might be okay for most people to use the device at 120Hz. Some users believe that there is no difference, but if you are one of the users who prefer to use the 120Hz display we recommend it. It will be a point of no return.
Show more content
Samsung's default font resizing is subjective, for some it may be useless, for others it is essential based on your preferences and needs. Go to the display settings that allow you to make these kinds of changes.
Enable gesture navigation on Samsung Galaxy S20
Go to Settings and search for "navigation type" and select Full Screen Gestures. Android 10's gesture navigation is very intuitive. The change is difficult, but there is not a single person who has not been completely convinced once they have tried this type of navigation.
Disable vibration of smart alarms
Smart alert is a well-calibrated and rather useful but extremely annoying feature sometimes with Samsung smartphones. Basically, Smart Alert will vibrate when you pick up the phone if calls or messages came while the phone was idle. It could be useless and even annoying so we recommend deactivating it.
Disable sleep of unused apps on Samsung Galaxy S20
The idea is that people install a lot of apps they never use and that together lead to incremental battery drain with their various check-ins and background processes that reduce the longevity of the smartphone. So turning unused apps into suspend might be a good idea, but for some, not getting a notification from an app because your phone has decided you don't need that app can be a problem.
Optimized for Google Photos
Since Android started queuing background tasks more aggressively with the “battery optimization” feature, uploading content to Google Photos could take hours. Fortunately, you can disable it. Go to Settings and search for "Optimize Battery Usage", which should show you the Special Access menu. Press optimize battery usage, then tap “App not optimized” and select “All”. Search for photos and set to off. Now your photos and videos will be uploaded as soon as they are taken, as Google Photos intended.
Disable Samsung Daily and vibrate for notifications
Whether it is Samsung Daily or vibration due to the notifications received, in both cases we are dealing with two of the options present on the device but rather superfluous. If you prefer to avoid filling up your memory with Samsung Daily or having a constantly noisy device due to notifications, you can disable both from the settings screen and we recommend that you do so. In the case of notifications, you could simply decrease the intensity of the vibration if you still prefer it to be present.
