Smart Lock originally appeared in Chrome OS in 2015, providing Chromebook users with a quicker way to unlock their laptop than having to manually enter their PIN or password. While it's undeniably useful, it hasn't been updated in years to use modern hardware. Google is finally adding quick unlock to Wear OS, full of compatibility for its entire device portfolio, as part of its CES 2022 announcements.
Wear OS users will be able to unlock their Chromebook, Android phone, or tablet just by having a connected smartwatch nearby, however it's not ready to launch yet. According to information released today that demonstrates this capability, every wearable device must use a passcode to avoid unwanted locks. Google defines the method as unblocking whenever you are 'close', which implies that it will only work within a certain range.
Google is introducing several features with Wear OS
It's a long-awaited feature that will make the Android ecosystem more connected. After all, iOS users can unlock their iPhones while connected to an Apple Watch, even if they're wearing a face mask. Although Google has already offered something similar with Trusted Devices, the new solution claims to work with more devices while being a more secure touch.
With the company working to turn Wear OS 3 into a platform consumers want to use, connecting wearables to other products you already own is a breeze. It's not the only encrypted device in your life that's getting easier to open. Google's recently introduced digital car keys are currently enabled with BMW vehicles on select Samsung and Pixel phones and will receive a nice UWB update later this year.
Any device that supports both car keys and ultra wideband can get a duplicate key, allowing a friend or family member to borrow the vehicle. According to Google, this feature will be available on more phones and cars this year, increasing capabilities beyond its initial limits.
